Welcome to the Gallup Beat!
What is the Beat? I’m not quite sure, to be honest. For now let’s call it a news blog, but it’s definitely a work in progress and will likely change over time. With that said, the idea behind the Beat — my mission — is to put a spotlight on Gallup, New Mexico, and the people who live here. I want to highlight everything from the good to the bad, from the ugly to the beautiful. Most importantly, though, I aim to find and tell the truth of Gallup.
Who am I? My name is Richard Reyes, and I’ve lived in Gallup since the summer of 2010 after I graduated from New Mexico State University with degrees in journalism and English. I’ve been a journalist at heart since I was a freshman in high school, and I’ve been working for the Gallup Independent newspaper since I moved here — first as news editor, then as city reporter, now as city editor.
I still work for the Independent, but the editing grind has taken its toll on me, and I miss writing. That’s what inspired me to start the Beat. I love telling stories, and I feel like there’s a piece of Gallup’s story that isn’t being told. I hope the Beat can fill that void — with features about inspiring people and community gatherings, with news about politics and current events, with investigations into city government and public officials, and with in-depth looks into social issues and controversial subjects.
